# Members and roles

> The five organization roles, what each can do, and how to change roles, transfer ownership and remove members

Every member of your organization has a role. The role decides what they can do across the whole organization: create AI coworkers, build apps, manage members, or change settings and billing. Give each person the smallest role that lets them do their work.

## Roles

Vybe has five roles, from most to least access:

| Role | Who it's for |
| - | - |
| **Owner** | Runs the organization. Full control, including making other people Owners. |
| **Admin** | Manages people and settings. Can do everything an Owner can, except assign or change the Owner role. |
| **Editor** | Builds things. Can create AI coworkers and apps, but can't invite or manage members. |
| **Viewer** | Uses what others have built. Can use coworkers and apps shared with them, but can't create coworkers or apps. |
| **Guest** | Someone outside your core team. Can only use apps and AI coworkers that are explicitly shared with them, and talks to coworkers in Slack rather than in the Vybe web app. |

People who join through [Auto-join from Slack](https://docs.vybe.build/organization/organizations.md#auto-join-from-slack) or their first [SSO](https://docs.vybe.build/organization/sso.md) sign-in start as **Viewers**.

> [!NOTE]
>
> "Builder" isn't a role. It's a billing term for members who can build. See [Seats and billing](#seats-and-billing).

## How coworker and app access fits in

Your organization role sets what you can do across the organization. Each AI coworker and each app also has its own access setting, which decides who can see and use that particular coworker or app.

* **AI coworkers** can be open to everyone (**Anyone can talk to** *name*), limited to **Specific people**, or kept to **You only**. People added to a coworker get a per-coworker role: **Viewer** ("Can chat"), **Editor** ("Can edit") or **Admin**. See [Sharing and access](https://docs.vybe.build/coworkers/sharing-and-access.md).
* **Apps** can be open to **Anyone in the organization**, limited to **Specific people**, or kept to **You only**. People added to an app are **Viewer** or **Editor** on that app. See [Access and sharing](https://docs.vybe.build/apps/access-and-sharing.md).

For example, an Editor can build apps, but still can't open an app another member kept to **You only**.

## Invite members

Owners and Admins invite people from **Settings → Organization → Members** with **Invite Member**. Pick their **Role** in the invitation; only Owners can invite someone as an Owner. For the full steps and how invitees accept, see [Invite people](https://docs.vybe.build/organization/organizations.md#invite-people).

## Change a member's role

Owners and Admins can change roles.

1. Go to **Settings → Organization → Members**.
2. In the **Role** column, open the dropdown next to the member.
3. Pick the new role.
4. Check the message in **Confirm role change** and click **Confirm**.

A few rules apply:

* You can't change your own role.
* Only Owners can make someone an Owner or change an Owner's role. Admins don't see a role dropdown for Owners.
* Every organization needs at least one Owner. You can't demote the last one ("Cannot remove the last owner of the organization").

## Transfer ownership

An organization can have several Owners. To hand the organization to someone else:

1. As an Owner, change their role to **Owner**.
2. If you want to step back, ask the new Owner to change your role. You can't change your own.

## Remove a member

Owners and Admins can remove members.

1. Go to **Settings → Organization → Members**.
2. Click **…** next to the member and choose **Remove**.

> [!WARNING]
>
> There's no confirmation step. The member loses access to the organization right away.

You can't remove yourself or an Owner from this menu. To remove an Owner, another Owner first changes their role.

Removing someone doesn't delete their Vybe account. They keep access to any other organizations they belong to. To leave an organization yourself, ask an Owner or Admin to remove you.

## Seats and billing

The **Subscription** page (**Settings → Organization → Subscription**) shows two member counts:

* **Builders**: "Members with builder access". Owners, Admins and Editors count here.
* **Viewer**: members with the Viewer role.

Paid plans include unlimited builders and viewers. For plans, credits and pricing, see [Plans and credits](https://docs.vybe.build/getting-started/plans-and-credits.md) and the [pricing page](https://www.vybe.build/pricing).
